The Devil Climbs the Stairway to School (魔王、学校の階段を昇る, Maō, Gakkō no Kaidan o Noboru) is the sixth episode of the Hataraku Maou-sama! anime series.

Summary[]

Mao and Shiro both dine at a BBQ restaurant to celebrate Mao's recent promotion. It's revealed that Lucifer lives with them, and because of this, Lucifer has been ruing their budget because of his online shopping addiction. Shiro then suggests that Mao discipline Lucifer for his actions.

On Ente Isla, a lady reports to the high priests that Olba has failed his mission and has gone missing. To make matters worse, Emi and Mao were still alive, and Emerada had spread the word that Olba was an apostate. The news shocks Father Roberto, and the lady asks for a confirmation of two choices, either confirm Olba is an apostate or "liquidate" Emi, Emerada, and Albert. Although the priests call the choices absurd, the lady claims this is the same order they gave the Inquisition. When asked for her suggestion, the scene fades out before she can answer.

Switching to Mao's apartment, Mao and Shiro return home, where Lucifer is now going by Hanzō Urushihara. He's given a small pork bowl and assigned to use the internet to research the magic of that world. To prove to Mao of his computer skills, Hanzo contacts Emi while she's at work, much to her dismay.

At work, Chi congratulates Mao on being promoted to Shift Manager in under half a year. Mao downplays it as a temp position since he is only a fill-in when the real manager is away on business. Emi then enters the place and confronts Mao over the recent phone call Hanzo made while she was at work, which Chi tries to de-escalate.

Meanwhile, Hanzo does some net research, and his findings lead him to a website showing a list of Shibuya's scary spots. Outside, Shiro finds a place in Turkey that may be a hot spot for Mao to regain his power from. As he checks the mail, Shiro finds a letter from the landlady.

Around dusk, Mao talks with Emi outside his work and explains to Emi that Lucifer goes by Hanzo now and has to lay low since Olba was arrested. The revelation shocks Emi as Hanzo lives with Mao, who explains that he has no magical power left and can't return to their world. Hearing this amuses Emi, who boasts of having enough power, making Mao question why she hasn't returned yet, and Emi claims she's a Hero.

When Mao returns home, he finds Hanzo passed out, and Shiro pokes his head out of the restroom and warns him not to look at the picture sent by the Land Lady. It's later explained that the picture of the Land Lady in a bikini who was vacationing in Hawaii. The conversation then shifts to if Hanzo has found anything regarding collecting magic in that world. Hence, Hanzo shows Mao his finding of a haunted school and believes that a Demon may be involved.

Eventually, Mao and Shiro visit the school, called the Sasahata North High School, where Chi is a student, and she waves at them after she spots the two standing in front of the school gate.

Sometime later, Mao talks with Chi in the breakroom about the Sealed Classroom rumor in Chi's school, and she agrees to assist Mao with investigating it.

That night, Chi guides Mao and Shiro to the old school where the Sealed Classroom was. On their way there, Chi explains to a curious Mao about five of the seven other mysteries that haunt the school. Pressed by Shiro about the seventh, Chi answers that if you learn it, you'll get a call on your cellphone that'll steal your soul when you answer it. Hearing this makes Mao frantic, even more so when Hanzo contacts him and informs them that the location is likely where a Gate was formally opened. Hence the missing student was likely sucked into the gate, and Hanzo believes that if his hypothesis is true, they can absorb the leftover energy for themselves.

Noises, accompanied by footsteps heading toward them, could then be heard, revealed to have been Emi. She's informed of the situation within the art room, and when asked to change her shoes, Mao and the group abandon her. Mao and the group then hide in the science room from the pursuing Emi; the moment she enters the room, she slices up the anatomical model. Unbeknownst to the group, they were being watched from afar by a robed figure in the old school.

Finally reaching the classroom, Shiro noticed that although it was boarded up, the boards were loose. Upon opening the doors, they find the place littered with food wrappings and a hand-held game system. Hanzo then contacts them and reluctantly reveals that's where Olba and he once stayed and nervously assures them they weren't there to retrieve his game system. Chi finds a packet of Udon on the ground outside as the group leaves.

The following night, Mao returns home from work and finds a young lady dressed in a kimono crouched outside his door. The young lady would then fall down the stairway, where Mao caught her at the bottom as she cursed herself for her carelessness.
