The Hero Experiences Human Warmth (勇者、心の温かさに触れる, Yūsha, Kokoro no Atatakasa ni Fureru) is the fourth episode of the Hataraku Maou-sama! anime series.

Summary[]

A news helicopter reports the recent earthquake that caused the Shinjuku Highway to collapse. By some rubble at the highway, Emi reminisces about her youth spent with her father Nord. Times were simpler and innocent back then for Emi, and one day, members of the Church of Ente Isla came and took Emi away as she was the chosen Hero of Humanity. This is because Emi is a Angel/Human hybrid and was the only one who had the power to defeat the Demon King Satan and his Demon Army. That would be the last time Emi ever saw her father again because the Demon Army was burned to ashes several days later by Demon General Lucifer.

In the present, Mao reverted to his humanesque form and checked up on Emi as Chi soon joined them. A police officer then approaches them and recognizes Chi as the daughter of Senichi, the officer that Mao used his magic on when he and Shiro first entered the alternate world. After the two part ways with Chi, Mao deduces that the magic he used on Senichi somehow afflicted Chi, which caused her to hear voices. Also, before leaving the scene, Mao informs Emi of his deduction of how their common enemy targeted them in an assassination attempt using the earthquake as a trap. A remorseful Shiro then appears and bows to Mao, begging his forgiveness for his past discretions.

Afterward, Emi hooks up with her co-worker Rika and enjoys dinner at her house. All while Emi enjoys dinner made by Rika. Emi then talks to Rika about her family in Kobe and her experience with the earthquake that occurred when she was little. It escalates to a heart-to-heart between them concerning Rika's speculation that Emi is ambivalent about something. From Mao's side, a couple of police officers stop them, and one of them mistakes them for a traveling comedy duo practicing their act on the street. The officer levels with them, claiming he wanted to be an actor, but failed. However, he does warn them to be careful about a string of recent muggings in the area.

Returning to Emi's side, she prepares to bathe as Rika watches the news that reports the robber has struck again, having his seventh victim. While Emi bathes, she contemplates if the same feeling she's having was felt by Mao when he decided to rescue the people down in the collapsed subway.

The next day, Emi visits Mao at his apartment to return the 1k yen she owes him, but to his dismay, she refuses to leave him alone for some time. She also learns about the "psychological trauma" that Shiro had experienced for what had occurred the day before. After a brief argument between them concerning Chi, Emi leaves only to fall down the stairway and get minor injuries. To better treat Emi's injuries, Mao has Shiro fetch some gauze wrap and bandaids at the pharmacy. While Shiro is gone, Mao and Emi get into a heated argument because Mao is being too kind to her despite being former enemies and that he's "hitting" on a high school girl. Furthermore, Emi was furious that Mao's army killed her father when she was young, and in stark contrast to Mao's former self, he apologized as he didn't understand humans back then.

Just then, Chi arrived with Shiro, who ran into her on his way home. Upon seeing the two, Chi tearfully misinterprets the situation and abruptly leaves. When she does, the landlady Miki arrives and informs Mao that repairs will be done around the complex and that Chi is connected to the recent string of earthquakes that have been occurring in recent days due to the Sonar Link she has. Before leaving, Miki suggests that Mao take responsibility for his actions and meet with Chi, heading toward the train station.

Two of Emi's companions from her origin world, Emeralda and Albert, are seen traveling through The Gate.

Meanwhile, Chi tearfully realizes she's in love with Mao, and then a young man approaches Chi and claims he'll use her despair to cause chaos, surpassing Mao. Using magic, the young man sprouts a pair of black wings and destroys a nearby building. Mao and company, who were nearby witnessed this and
