The Devil Goes on a Date with His Junior in Shinjuku (魔王、新宿で後輩とデートする, Maō, Shinjuku de Kōhai to Dēto Suru) is the third episode of the Hataraku Maou-sama! anime series.

Summary[]

Emi had left Shiro and Mao some pickled vegetables as thanks for allowing her to stay overnight and left the key to their place behind too.

At her home, Emi watches the news where both Mao and Shiro appear as it involves the crime scene where Mao and her were attacked. The following news report was about a string of robberies within the area where Mao and Chiho work. Simultaneously, Chiho was looking forward to meeting Mao concerning the earthquake she sensed would happen soon. However, it's heavily alluded that Chiho considered it a date more than anything.

During work, Emi was approached by Rika, who mentions the shooting nearby to where she lives and asks if she'd finally like to get something to eat. However, Emi declines, stating she's lost her wallet. At that moment, Emi gets a call, and when she answers it, a distorted voice calls Emi by her actual name and title. The voice warns her that she and Mao will one day die, which is the will of Ente Isla. Realizing that the voice is a Demon, Emi demands to know to whom she's speaking, but the voice ends the calls before they can answer.

Before Emi can finally agree to Rika's lunch proposal, Emi gets a call from the police, who need her at the station because Mao needs her ID to retrieve his bike. As Shiro and Mao talk about how Emi "fudged" her age, Emi appears before them and complains about being the guarantor for Mao. Before the two part ways, Emi warns Mao about the threatening call she received, who said they would die. Switching over to Chi, who came home from school, gets prepared for her meeting with Mao, who was on a clothes shopping trip with Shiro.

Afterward, the two meet at the city center, and after complimenting each other's clothing, they head to Cafe Dotour, holding hands, following Chi's request.

Meanwhile, Shiro is approached by Emi, who shocks him when she asks what he's doing. After briefly arguing between the two, Emi learns that Mao was on a "date" with Chi. Shiro then explains the situation surrounding Mao's date with Chi. Carefully observing Chi, Emi lists off everything from her analysis from her, leading to some comical results. Ultimately, Emi planned to confront Chi in the cafe, much to Shiro's dismay.

Inside the cafe, Chi confesses to Mao about her problems with tinnitus, which gradually escalated. Soon, she heard a voice speaking in a foreign language warning about impending earthquakes. Mao then contemplates the consistency of the recent earthquakes and how they're connected to Chi. Just then, Mao noticed Emi enter the cafe making him do a spit take, and once he regained his composure, Mao downplayed the tinnitus as nothing to worry about. As Mao said that, Shiro and Emi sat at another table parallel from them that was blocked off by a glass pane.

As the conversation continues, Chi alludes to confessing her feelings for Mao, but is stopped by Emi, who claims he's not as he appears to be. Immediately, Chi recognizes Emi as the lady who confronted Mao the other day and is thought to be his ex-girlfriend of some sort. A contentious argument breaks out between them, and as this goes on, a massive earthquake erupts, causing the entire infrastructure to collapse.

The earthquake caused Chi and Emi to be trapped together. Leaving their animosity behind, the two formally introduce each other, and Emi asks what made Chi fall in love with Mao. Chi deflects the question flusteredly, but Emi's too sharp to let it slide. Chi then asks if Emi really is Mao's "enemy", which she confirms and again warns her that Mao is not all he seems. Telling Chi she should rest, Emi uses magic to put Chi to sleep, and Mao arrives in his old form. Although Emi had planned to use the remainder of her magic to slay Mao, he instead planned to use his form to rescue the earthquake victims, which perplexed Emi as he was the Devil.

Trivia[]

  • In episode 3, at about 09:55, Alciel refers to the Unislo shirt that Maou always wears. "Unislo" is a parody of the famous Japanese casual wear designer, manufacturer, and retailer Uniqlo.[1]
  • The incidental music during the shopping trip for Maou's clothes was used as the Main Menu music on the DVD/Blu-Ray series release.
