The Hero Experiences a Fray (勇者、修羅場を経験する, Yūsha, Shuraba o Keiken Suru) is the ninth episode of the Hataraku Maou-sama! anime series.

Summary[]

The streets of the city are bustling because of the Sasahata Tanabata Festival, and Rika, Emi, and Suzuno visit the now barren MgRonald's. Unimpressed by the lack of liveliness in the place, Rika suggests they visit Sentucky Fried Chicken instead because of its long line of customers.

Waiting in line at the SFC, Rika asks Emi and Suzuno to tell her about Mao in preparation for their "battle" against him. When it was their turn in line, the trio gave their orders to Sarue, who showered Rika in compliments and flattery. Taking their seats on the restaurant's upper level, Suzuno and Emi tell Rika everything Mao is to them, which conflicts with the other, and Rika points it out. This upsets Emi, who goes on a diatribe about Mao, and Shiro, who was also there, loses his nerve about Emi's besmirching remarks against Mao.

As Mao waits for Shiro, a flashback shows Shiro, Hanzo, and him in their apartment, where Mao asks Shiro to go on a reconnaissance mission at SFC. Initially, Shiro is against it because of their financial expenses, but Mao convinces him, claiming it's to assist in his rise to power. Back in the present, Chi approaches Mao and informs him that she's completed the chores around the restaurant, which Mao notices the unsurprisingly dispirited employees. As Mao contemplates how to proceed, Chi suggests they stand outside and try and draw in a crowd of customers. When one of the employees tries to console Mao, claiming he doesn't have to shoulder all responsibilities himself, Mao gives a brief motivational speech and asks that they wash the windows.

Over at SFC, Shiro confronts Emi's table, although he wants to regain his honor because of the disdainful remarks spoken by Emi. She convinces him to join them after offering to pay for whatever he wants there to help with his reconnaissance mission. Confused by Shiro's relationship with Emi, Rika asks if he's their friend, which the two vehemently deny.

After Shiro introduced himself to her and was explained Rika's motive to learn why Emi wants to keep people away from Mao. Hence, Shiro explains Mao and his' fictitious background, where Mao owned a company focused on real estate and personal placement. It was also said that Emi worked for a rival company as a temp. The main plot of Shiro's story displays Mao as a hard-working businessman; however, due to Emi's interference and the disastrous recession, their business went bankrupt. Despite how far they've fallen, they both take their current jobs seriously, hoping to regain all they've lost.

Shiro then finishes his clarification of Mao and Emi's relationship with the other, which Rika accepts as factual. She also relates to Mao and Shiro's backstory since her family owned a small factory, and their lifestyle wasn't much different from their current one. Pleased by Rika's words, Shiro thanks her, causing Rika to blush and become flustered. Although Emi wanted to end things there, Rika was now interested in checking out Mao, and Shiro allowed it in exchange for Emi purchasing the restaurant's desserts and salads. Begrudedly, Emi did this and was given some positive advice by Sarue, noting that time and people change, and it's best to accept it and go with the flow. He also gives one final piece of advice: men tend to take advantage of women when they're vulnerable.

At MgRonald's, Shiro elaborates on his findings to Mao about SFC and then orders food for Hanzo and his' dinner for that night. When Shiro leaves, Mao politely asks that they order first and then sit at the tables; however, Emi brusquely orders from there, which agitates Mao. He then gets into a bit of an argument with Rika, who confesses she's there to see what Mao was like, and Chi soon joins them. She admonishes Mao's attitude toward the customers and delivers Emi's ordered food. As soon as Rika introduces herself to Chi, Rika instantly likes Chi.

To disprove that Mao is an "Idiot" to Rika and can meet Emi's capable worker standards. Mao tries a couple of innovative tricks to draw in customers, but they fail. An acquaintance of Mao named Watanabe delivers a couple of bamboo stalks, and Mao and the employees decorate them for the Sasahata Tanabata Festival. Chi then explains how Mao befriended Watanabe by volunteering as a park trash cleaner and his idea to use the bamboo stalking to draw in customers for the local festival. The bamboo stalkings and Chi's internet fame from an earlier incident attracted multiple customers, but Suzuno was notably alert.

Trivia[]

  • In episode 8, the fast-food chain introduced SFC as, in fact, a parody of two things- First, KFC, known in Japan as just Kentucky, or Kenchiki (short for Kentucky Chicken). Second, the short-form customers use for SFC is "sentakki"- Sentakki is the Japanese word for washing machine.
  • A piano rendition of Zero plays quietly in the background as Rika gushes over Ashiya.
