The Devil Carries Out His Duties ( 魔王、己の職責を果たす, Maō, Onore no Shokuseki o Hatasu) is the twelfth episode of the Hataraku Maou-sama! anime series.

Summary[]

Shiro awakens in a hospital bed and laments over his current circumstances. The nurse then visits him and is pleased to see him awake, and after the nurse confirms that the hospital excepts his insurance offers him another IV bag. Though, Shiro flatly rejects it because of his fear of any expensive co-pays. Upon exiting his room, Shiro finds an unconscious police officer and was then gut punched by Olba, who stole his insurance card.

Meanwhile, Mao rode Dullahan to the City Hall, where Emi was magically restrained in the sky as Sarue fired off his eye beams at her. Sarue demands that Emi relinquish Better Half to him, but Emi couldn't summon it and claims it rejects him. However, Sarue claims it's Heaven's collective will that it be returned to them because it doesn't belong in a Human's hands. On the other hand, Emi demands that Chi be left out of this, but Sarue refuses, claiming she's a precious sample to investigate a Demon's effects on a Human. Emi disparages Sarue, causing him to fire off a powerful beam at Emi right as Mao arrives at the building, only to be blocked off by a barrier.

Noting that Emi is at her bodily endurance limit, Sarue suggests she submit to his demands and fires off a couple more eye beams. It's then that Sarue senses that Mao was nearby, and he sends Suzuno to deal with him, but before she goes, Emi asks if Suzuno was really alright with her and Mao dying on Earth. Suzuno does not answer and heads down to where Mao was at; he uses what little magic he has to dispel the barrier and smashes Dullahan in the process, leaving Mao in despair.

Avoiding all of Suzuno's attacks, Mao briefly flustered her by removing his MgRonald's outfit and dressed in some of his regular clothes. In a flustered state, Suzuno uses her weapon to blow off Mao's shirt, flustering her even further. As Suzuno has a back-and-forth argument with Mao, all while Hanzo finds some food in the fridge that was made by Suzuno. Mao notes his disappointment in Suzuno, who proved to him that she's no better than Olba. Hearing that triggered Suzuno, and she violently attacked Mao, who, after recovering from the attack, answered that his motives for being there were to protect his co-worker Chi. But not only that, he's fully aware that Suzuno wants him to deal with Sarue and leaves the scene to the dark angel's location.

At Mao's apartment, Olba visits Hanzo and offers him the deal of returning to Heaven once again, and Hanzo menacingly grins at the proposal.

Back on the roof, Sarue grew impatient with Emi and prepared to take Emi's sword by force from her body, but Chi calls him a pervert. This triggers Sarue, who finds the comment offensive, but was further triggered when Emi and Chi offload a barrage of disparaging remarks against him. Warning Sarue that Mao won't stand for Chi being put in danger by Sarue because he was her shift leader and Mao was climbing flights of stairs because the elevator to the place was out of service.

Eventually, Mao arrives on the roof with a bewildered and tepid response from Emi and Chi. However, Mao is easily overwhelmed by Sarue, who gets his power when he's closer to the moon, and to make matters worse, Olba casts a spell that bolsters Sarue's power. Using his newly acquired power, Sarue constrains Mao in some rubble and hovers him in the air by his side. However, as the people down in Tokyo are in a panic, Shiro rises from his hospital bed and calls out to his master while Mao dark aura swirls around him.

Now in his Satan form, Mao entrusts Suzuno with caring for Chi and Emi as he deals with Sarue. From afar, Hanzo takes back Emi's bag from Olba and then knocks him out after he figures out he betrayed him. As the moon starts to be engulfed by a shadow, Mao gives Sarue two choices give up or get beaten. Sarue chooses the latter and gets epically beaten by Mao.
